um that depends on the size of the ad the placement in the paper color or black and white and a few other things

Depends on where you live, which paper, and a few other factors.

Things like craigslist and blogs are slowly replacing the paper industry. Even the post office is feeling the results.

factors that influence the cost:

classified (text) vs display (photo or graphic)

if graphic color vs B&W

if graphic supplied vs creation

size in inches 2x3 is cheaper than 3x5

days it runs ; 1 day vs two weeks

days of the week it runs (sat & sun) being most expensive

category hot vs cold (cars vs waffle irons)

readership (newspaper subscriptions some now include grocery & street corners sales to bump these numbers and charge more)

your history of payment (multiple billings vs pay on demand)

how good you are at negotiating

you get the idea

Ads on newspapers can be quite costly. However, it depends on the size and place you want to have the ad placed. It is true that free classified ads sites like craigslist, backpage, planetadvert.com etc are fast replacing newspaper ads however they are still quite effective as they still reach millions of people.
