That's becoming less common, however I believe it stems from Internet Explorer's icon "e", which was the first major browser.

That in itself may have stemmed from "e" being short for "electronic", as in email = electronic mail.

'e' generally stands for Internet/Web. Like you have many words e-mail,e-governance, e-shopping,e-education, etc. All these indicates Internet form of the actual concept...
