What ways do you know of, and can you describe how they help?

Helping a website's PageRank etc, using social networking sites for SEO purposes.

Listing your site on a social community will not directly improve your PageRank (they use the rel="nofollow" tag). It's been my experience, however, listing your site will mean your site will be spidered by the search engines much faster than the 3 to 6 months it normally takes for a search engine to find you.

In addition, posting frequently about your site on social media can bring your site up in the "live search" portion of major search engines where they show information that is trending from the social sites.

By making frequent updates and building followers on the social media sites, you're also exposing your material to a lot more people. Those people may choose to link to your content - and THAT has significant SEO value. So while you do not directly benefit, leveraging social media can result in big opportunities for SEO
