It seems they are only for private use because the bookmark links are not on a public url like delicious or stumbleupon bookmarking urls are. My question is does adding your sites to yahoo bookmarks or google bookmarks help SEO in any way?

Yes it will help if you add bookmarks on high authority websites. But this is not enough to increase popularity. There are lot more SEO tasks to gain popularity on the web.
For example - Directory submission, forum discussion, blog or article submission and blog commenting etc.

Bookmarking is one of the SEO process but we can not say adding sites in Yahoo or in Google help you get ranked drastically.Bookmarking help to boost your sites ranking a bit way but not alone responsible to make it popular on the web.

Social Bookmarking concept has the aim to bring repeated traffic rather than to build authority of any site.
So the answer will be: If other people will add your website in Yahoo and Google bookmarks (private ones as you observed) you will gain repeated traffic only and no SEO benefits.

Bookmarking mostly helpful for seo, because its give high traffic for your website. And your site get 1 more click from google crawl.
Bookmarking = Best of SEO.
