Password protection for my internet connection.? - 532 - 05-19-2014 10:50 AM

People in my neighborhood keep stopping outside in their vehicles, with their laptops; logging on to my internet connection. How do I go about setting up a password to protect my connection?

You need to go into your wireless router's setup menu. This will be by use of a web browser -- you'll have to refer to the printed or an online instruction manual for the particular model of router you have for the IP address and default username and password to access the menus. When you're in, choose either WPA or WPA2 encryption type, and enter whatever passkey you'd like to use. After that's done, hit OK and the router will reboot with the new security setting in place. After that, no one will be able to access your Internet connection without knowing the password. Also, you can choose the option to disable SSID Broadcast -- this will make it so that your router is not even visible to passersby. If you, your family or friends have laptops or other devices like an Xbox 360/PS3/Wii or iPod Touch that you wish to use along with your wireless router, after implementing the WPA security you'll need to go into their own menus and change the appropriate settings.
