Why is it not a good idea to disconnect the computer modem? - 195 - 05-26-2014 04:28 AM
I had a new internet service installed today with a cable hookup, and the tech said not to unplug the modem because I would not be able to connect it again without a problem.
What type of problem could I encounter? I do not want to leave anything plugged in when I leave the home for more than one day..ty

you can safely unplug the router and modem, there wont be any issues with turning it off.
you just wont be able to access the internet whilst it's off.
they may have said to leave it on for the first 2-4 weeks whilst they 'calibrate' your line. i'd leave it on for this time, after you can turn it off when you want to.

He's talking rubbish!
Disconnecting it is no different from turning off the power to it for an extended time, and your computer should retain the settings. and recover successfully.
Apart from all this, he should provide you with the settings so that you can re-install at some future date if necessary (even if you need Help-Desk assistance), without having the expense of calling a techie to do it..

It sometimes happens that the modem will 'forget' it's log-in values to your iSP. (your account username and password) Not always, but sometimes.**
Since it is the modem that establishes and maintains the Internet connection, if you don't have the account info handy, and/or know how to enter those values into the modem interface, you'd have to call the iSP tech's to walk you thru that phase...and it can be frustrating for both parties.
Knowing those things on your own would be best, so keep the values written on a piece of tape right on the modem; and train yourself in accessing the interface, before it becomes a 'must do' operation.
