I have a facebook account with many friends, however, not all of them need to see my pictures, updates, etc. Is there a way to create entire groups or do I have to block them by name?

no you can create private groups on Facebook and just invite people you want no need to block only admin can invite people you are the admin of your group and you can give that rights to any one you want from the group

Yes, under friends>lists I think.
You could always start a fresh account just for your close friends.
