Google figures, hey, if a lot of people are linking to a certain page, it must be a really good page! Let’s give preference in our search engines to that page over others of a similar topic so we can easily deliver the very best pages to our search engine users

When any website gives you a backlink in return of your submission it is known as do follow link which is opposite of no follow link. Some website does not gives backlink but in case of dofollow it will always give a backlink.

Whn you place a link on another website it will eaither be "dofallow" or "nofollow" if it is "do" then the link will count as a backlink to your website and help with rankings. If it is no follow, then it will not count, but sometime can also help having a mixed varation of both "natural looking"

Sites that gives backlink are dofollow sites. Like http://www.facebook.com/ is no follow.

"Do Follow" links pass Page Rank to the site named in the link.
"No Follow" links do not.
