sometimes I don't feel like chatting with certain people, so is there a way to be on your facebook, but not advertise to everyone that you are?

If you click on the little icons down by the chat, you'll find an Invisible option.

In the bottom right hand corner you'll see a head and shoulders symbol with a green dot, click on that an' you can log out of chat or go offline.

click on the chat icon (with a head and a green circle). There will be an option there in the popup bubble that says "You are online. Go offline." Click the "Go offline" link and it will make you appear just as if you were off facebook (you click the "Go online" link in the same exact place as the "Go offline" one if you want to turn chat back on).
