Problem with sharing Internet connection? - Mark D - 05-29-2014 07:30 PM
I have two computers, a laptop running Windows Vista and a computer running Windows XP.The laptop is connected to the Internet and I want the computer to access the Internet through the laptop.The network is connected by an RJ-45 cable and the Internet by another RJ-45 cable.
The internet connection works fine giving the laptop access to local files and the Internet.But the network connection is only giving the computer access to local files and not the internet.The connection status says that the network connection has limited connectivity.
I have tried many different things to fix this problem including repairing the connection but the computer still cannot access the Internet even though it can access local files on the other computer.
Could anyone give me any help with this?

Buy yourself a router, get an adsl modem router or a cable router.
The router makes things alot easier, for very little money.
(£30 or so) it doesn't even have to be wifi as you are doing RJ45, but with a lappy, its best to do wifi.

Have you tried running the internet connection sharing (ICS) setup on both pcs ?

Sorry if I've got my stating-the-bleeding-obvious hat on, but have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop?

I bought myself a hub a while back from BT because my son was always going on the net and i got sick of unplugging & swapping the ethernet leads, but the problem was solved as the BT Hub has 2 ethernet fittings which is great we now both go on whenever and no more swapping cales, it's worth considering.
I have a laptop and he has a desktop and it all works fine.

trying to visualise this set up.
as i see it, you would need 2 network cards on the lappy (one in, one out to internet)
awkward, as conflicts could arise and if you do not know how to cure them...you are b@uggered.
as already noted, a simple router is by far the easiest solution.
they normally have 4 RJ ports so if you need to extend your home network you can.
the router can be wired or wireless, with wireless you have both options but i would advise sticking with what you have for now and use the wireless option once you know how to lock it down securely.
with a router, there are no 'drivers', there will be a browser based set up screen...add the log in and password from your isp and that is really all you need....other settings can be learned later so dont get confused, it is simple.

fiirts of all you should share the internet connection on your laptop and then connect to the internet, then ctrl+R "cmd". type ther "ipconfig /all" write down the dns server IP of your internet connection. then in your pc in open your local connection+ properties+ internet protocol for the gateway insert the IP of your laptop and for the DNS down there insert the IP you wrote it down befor
