I don't want it to drop down with sites recently viewed every time I start to type something in. Do you know how to turn this off?

If you use Firefox, go to Preferences > Privacy >Location Bar. You can also use private browsing in most browsers. In Firefox 20, use File > New Private Window. In older versions of Firefox, private browsing is under Tools.
