How do I get internet service in a rural area? - PeterB - 06-01-2014 06:20 PM

My sister lives on the side of a mountain in a rural area. She needs to get high speed internet service (her ISP is ending dial-up access soon.)

She is not able to link to satellite, or broadband due to her location. She cannot access DSL - her phone lines are digital not analog.

Does she have any other options?

Thanks

Hello from rural Illinois. She will need a WISP (wireless ISP). I am not too familiar with Canada but I have worked with my company's canadian's offices and some of them are using WISP service from Bell. They are frequent fliers on our support hotline because the remote backup software doesn't like their flakey connection.

Warning you: WISP connections are expensive, slow, and have low bandwidth caps. If she's currently on dial-up she probably won't notice a different aside from the increased cost, though.
