If a retailer offers a free pot of cream with a punnet of strawberries is that offer no longer valid if the punnet of strawberries is reduced in price due to it being close to the sell by date?

Yes because the offer is for £xx buying you strawberries and cream. Once the strawberries are reduced in price they no longer make up a part of the offer.
