Trying to share PC's internet connection with a Mac? - 663 - 06-04-2014 09:57 PM
Hello everyone. I am trying to figure out how i can share my pc's internet connection with my mac using an Ethernet cable. My pc and mac are both laptops. The pc is running Windows XP SP2, and my mac is running Tiger 10.4.11
please help!

I presume you already have an Internet source which is terminated by a modem that provides a single RJ45 WAN socket.
You need a gateway router. Almost all that are made today have a built in 4 port network switch integrated into them. Connect the modem feed to router WAN feed; connect each pc to a separate LAN switch port of the router. Use straight CAT5 cable.

Ok I assume you get the internet trough dial up? If that is the case you need to enable Internet connection sharing in XP and your Ethernet cable needs to be a "Crossover cable" if you are connecting the mac directly to your PC. The difference between a standard ethernet cable and a crossover cable is in the wires at the connection point. A standard cable on both ends have exactly the same color coded order, whereas a crossover cable has on one connector the two outer wires crossed over.
But if you have a high speed connection by a router and plug the internet connection into the router and plug both computers into the router. Much simpler.
