Should I be friends with my boss on facebook? - Lyndi - 11-09-2012 08:24 AM

We get along really well...and we are friends and we do talk about personal things pretty often, but I've been hesitant to be facebook friends. I just found out that she made a comment that I wouldn't be her friend on facebook. I don't want her to feel bad, I just feel like it might be crossing a boundary that is not ok, since she does have authority over me.

I think it's completely fine if you befriend your boss on Facebook. If you two have already established a good relationship with each other, I don't see why not. What I think could happen (and does happen sometimes), is that you and your boss get in an argument and you vent your anger on her through Facebook. Your boss could read that status, and the outcome won't be too pretty. There's also the issue of responsibility. If you partied too hard one night, had one too many drinks, etc., your boss could find out through a status or photo.

Ultimately, it is your choice. If you feel as if you won't get into any trouble from friending your boss on Facebook, then go ahead. I wouldn't suggest it if you post crude statuses, have inappropriate friends (that could damage your reputation), or know that you may encounter some difficulties with befriending your boss.

I think you are correct. The two of you can be friends, but being FB buddies can be crossing a line. I feel the same way you do about this.
Be honest with her, just tell her it feels awkward and uncomfortable. If she is a true friend, she'll understand.
