Tom,

First you need to purchase a domain name. You can do that by visiting Godaddy.com. When you purchase a domain name, instead of selecting .com, select the co.uk

After that you need to have that domain name hosted. You can host with companies such as blue host or hostgater.

When you are done setting that up, you will need to determine which platform you want to sell you products from. Do you want to pay for a turnkey product such as shopify? Or do you want to pay for a designer to create a site for you with ecommerce functionalities. Check out Wordpress.

This should get you started but please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you need more information. Good Luck.

If you residing in UK and want to start a website try http://www.gbbo.co.uk/
Its a system that Google launched which offers free websites and resources to help British businesses online.
Or you can buy a domain name from domain name registrars like Godaddy.com, Gandi.net, Moniker, Namecheap etc.

Once you have a domain name you will need hosting.
A couple that you could use are Hostgator, 1&1, Easily, Fasthosts etc.

Now if you want to build an eCommerce site the best options would be to built on Wordpress or Magento platform.
