I received a facebook message from a woman named Betty Oliver, in January,2014, saying she came across my facebook profile and decide to write to me. I don't know her and no one I know knows her. so how was she able to contact me?

It's just probably the usual spam. If your profile on Facebook doesn't show your email address publicly, then she's not a real person.
