Hypothetical Question about Anonymous Torrenting? - Julia - 06-10-2014 08:22 PM

If a person were to use anonymous browsing (available on Safari, Chrome, etc.) and THEN go a torrent website to download movies/music/etc., could the I.P. address still be tracked?

Many college students are warned that music labels will crack down on illegal downloading because it's easier to trace on university networks, but with this system, could they?

Again, this is hypothetical. A debate between a friend and me.

Anonymous browsing is different from downloading. Most likely you are using a torrent downloader like Vuze or Bittorrent, or uTorrent. Also I might add that anonymous browsing doesn't track your browsers history, and it doesn't necessarily hide your IP. Universities can view the traffic and it's really easy for them to find out.

However, if you go through a proxy, your IP/location will be hidden, but not to the University since they can find out what is happening on their network by looking at the traffic.
