I lived in Guangzhou for awhile and found that it is possible to update via email, but it was sporadic at best. I don't know if I was able to use this method for pictures though. What I did find works (after a long time being there) was a add on for Firefox, and now IE8+ and iOS devices is Cocoon. Its not really a wall jumping service or anything like that, its a secure server connection for you computer to help eliminate a lot of the worry about connecting to sites on the internet. That is their mission statement.

But what it does for you in China is create a secure tunnel between your pc/laptop iOS device and their server in the US, essentially spoofing the internet to think you are searching from California or some place like that opening FB Twitter, Youtube etc.. Although when I first found it it was entirely free no ads nothing, they have very recently made a paid version that they will advertise occasionally as a popup video.

Sorry I am sure that sounds like an advertisement bump or something, but I used it for 5months in China and use it occasionally in Taiwan to open HULU or to watch videos online that have regional view limits. I am really impressed with it. Especially since I didn't need to install something that takes forever to download on China's crap butt slow internet, or would download but then get blocked because the gov't web censor dept. decided that it was evil.
