When I'm on 'invisible' on Skype do my contacts still get notified when I switch to 'online'
and if I last quitted Skype whilst invisible and I sign back in do my contacts get notified that I've signed in even though my setting is still invisible

If you are 'Invisible' and you switch to 'online' your contacts do get notified that you are 'online'.
If you quitted Skype whilst 'Invisible', and then you sign in back, your setting remains 'Invisible', so your contacts does not get any notification.
