I want to send my friend a direct message but I don't know how to send them a direct message, how would I do that?

In addition to public updates and @replies, you can send followers private tweets, called direct messages, too. If someone is following you, you can send a direct message from the web via the "message" link on the profile page.
The person you wish to DM must be following you.

Hit direct messages in the sidebar and then choose the name and type the message

Go to Direct Message on the right hand sidebar, and then select who you want to send the message to. You can only send direct messages to people who are following you.
You can also send a direct message by going to the users page and hitting send message on the side.

Click on your followers, then click on your follower, on the sidebar choose message user if link exists, write direct message.
