They have always been there for quite a while. Yea they are annoying because they target them specifically for you. I mean they know practically EVERYTHING about you because it's your facebook page. If you put "guitar" in your interests section well then viola you get guitar ads. But they have to do this to get money to keep facebook running.

Facebook needs ways to produce income...
The advertisers pay them to put ads on facebook, yeah it's annoying, but without them facebook would probably end up going bankrupt.

since facebook is a free site for its users to use, they need sponsors to help fund the cost in running the site, i mean for the web designers, graphic artist, and what not, its not easy to run a website, especially a large one like that, so they rents a space on the side of their page to a client for a certain price each month to keep the site going and to keep it free. this is why you see ads on the side, if they didn't have the sponsors and the ads there then you would be charged monthly to use the site, and it probably wouldn't be too cheap.

I don't know.. but I did a major clean out on mine today.
I'm tired of reading ads, peoples games scores.and even deleted
a bunch of people that aren't really my friends, they add you, post garbage,
so delete, delete... I managed to cut my list down to 10.. and that;s it.
you can go to edit friends.. and delete them also, go to edit, .
also go to Account, application settings, and adjust some of the settings.
