Are my facebook friends on my profile chosen randomly? - KrazyKat - 11-09-2012 09:07 AM

The same 8 faces are on mine and my friend's profile. Is it just random or is it by who viewed your profile?

It's a combination of random and calculated. Facebook uses a series of algorithms that dictate what shows up in your news feed, and the friends who most commonly show up on your profile. This is based on how much interaction you have with your Facebook friends. Liking a friend's status or photos counts as an interaction as does using Facebook to email message someone or simply visiting that person's page. The eight friend's profiles who show up in your profile page in the upper right are the people Facebook has decided you have the most interaction with, meaning they have been in photos with you, invited to the same events, they've liked your status updates, etc, AND a little bit of randomness mixed in to keep it interesting. The six friends who show up in your about bar with the word, "Friends" below it is more selectively driven by your specific actions, such as you visiting that person's page.
