So I am new to twitter and I only use it to see if I can get my favorite band to tweet me back, but I was confused because I am following them, but they are not following me so if I send them a direct message do they actually get it or is that only if they follow me?

Yes they get it, but they'll never respond to you because that's the way famous people are.
