the best way around this is to just follow people yourself and hope that they follow you in return. use twitter often with decent information and you'll soon get some followers

You could also become a star reporter who only reveals information by twitter instead of the internet or newspapers. Find out about area 51. I'm sure you will be the only one to reveal the aliens there by 140 characters or less!
