I created a few facebook groups but i have trouble getting members to join. I've seen many groups that manage to get thousands of members. How do they do it? What are some ways to get more members?

Funny picture, funny name, worthwhile cause etc.

It has to be a group everyone wants to join.
Either for a worthy cause or just something totally fun and pointless. Try making a fan page, even though facebook wants you to be the actual representative of the fan page. They don't check these things. I have at least two fan pages I created and I'm not an official rep.
Try creating and starting discussions in your group, that might motiviate more people to join. Be creative and quirky with your summary of the group, along with the group's name.

You can usually click a link on Facebook that auto emails all of your friends on Yahoo and any other site they are hooked to.
I did this today with a Sweepstakes trip to the Galapagos today and it notified all 915 people on my Yahoo contacts list. Most were happy to get it ... one was not. I only trigger those things once in a while when they are REALLY a good deal, just to keep people from getting upset.
You may need to recruit more friends onto your Yahoo "contacts" account.
