How long do you have to leave a friends request for it to go away? And if you reject a friend, does that person get a message?

it will not notify the person who you rejected, so feel free to do so

It stays there FOREVER!!! Because you cannot reject.
Luckily you can ignore it, they do not get a message, you simply ignore it, like you never got it.
