I've been checking some peoples facebook profiles who are from my sixth form and most days those people keep looking at me in a way or another.Can they tell I've been looking at their profile?

No. Google this and it tells you there is no way to tell who is looking at your profile including third party software.

There is no way they can tell, unless you like one of their comments, photos, etc. There is nothing that Logs visits to profiles, so you don't need to worry.
