im on twitter and i only have 1300 followers but there are loads of people with like 40k and theyve only been on it on the same amount of time that i have been on for. and i do get a fair amount of rts/favourites so its not that my tweets are boring. so how do i get more without posting a nude?!

Anyways, it depends, some people can gain a huge amount of followers because they pay for them. You can buy loads of fake followers for a few bucks. I suggest earning real followers throw social media exchange websites. They are usually other people like you looking for followers.
Its pretty simple, you follow other people and other people will follow you back, you can get a follower for each person you follow. I'm telling you, this kind of community can help you a lot, you can gain a good bunch of real followers by staying active every day.
