Kindle Fire HD Vs. Kindle Paperwhite 3G? - Alaynah Greene - 11-09-2012 10:14 AM

I can't decide which one best fits my needs. I would mostly use it for reading, and there isn't a single thing on the Kindle Fire that I can't do on my Galaxy S3, so I guess it's a matter of whether I want to do those things on a bigger screen. On my Galaxy S3 I can watch videos, listen to music, play games, and, of course, download apps. How good is the 3G and wi-fi on the Paperwhite? Can you check your email and get on other minimal sites like Facebook and Twitter on the Paperwhite? Which Kindle would hold more books? I guess the Fire would, given that it's 16 GB and the Paperwhite is just 2 GB, but I guess what I'm asking is: Which one is better for reading if that's going to be its main use? They both seem good. The only thing I've read that I don't like about the Paperwhite is that you have to pay extra not to have the special offers, and that it doesn't have speakers.

If ALL you want to do is read, get the paperwhite. But if you also want to play games, listen to music, watch movies, etc. then get the Fire.

The paperwhite is not a tablet, it's an e-Reader. It's better for reading (easier to read the screen in daylight and much longer battery life) and worse for everything else. It does have a web browser, but it's pretty limited and clunky. It does also have a few apps, but mostly simple games; not apps for Facebook, Twitter, or popular games.

So it goes like this.. If you want to have audio books too than you need to have the Kindle Fire HD because it can be more convenient to sometimes listen to the books and enjoy. The screen is good for reading and you can store a ton of books.

The 3g service on Kindle is good but the hardware is not good enough to make you able to use Facebook or twitter without lagging.

The Paperwhite will work more or less for webmail, twitter etc, but better if using the mobile versions of those sites. However you can only access those sites when using wifi on the kindle, not the free 3G.

As you say you have the galaxy anyway which does pretty much everything the Fire does so unless you have a particular desire for that fancy new gadget there's no real need.

For actual reading, you can't beat the Paperwhite - perfect screen for reading text and the battery lasts for much much longer than the Fire or any tablet and of course it's much cheaper than the Fire.
