Is there a way to find out if any of your Facebook friends are in a group before you join it? Or if they are also a fan of a certain movie, artist, or book when you become a fan.

i dont think so but you can check on there profile and see what time it was when they joined it and what time you joined it.

You can see which of your friends have joined a group by looking at the group's members. (Click the "See All" link in the Members portion of the Group's profile.) When you look at all of the group's members, if any of your friends have already joined that group, their name will be first on the list. If the first person on the list is not one of your friends, it means that none of your friends are currently members of that group.
The same doesn't work with Fan pages though. The best way to see if any of your friends are Fans of a particular Page are to just look at your friends' profiles or look at the News Feed.
