Ads popping up on facebook and youtube! Help!? - Lula - 11-09-2012 10:23 AM

When i logged into facebook today there were random ads all over the website and its the same with youtube, and everytime i watch a video the ad pops up and interrupts and i cant get it away. When im watching a video on facebook the ad comes on and i can hear it but can't see it. It's actually pissing me off i can't watch youtube video's anymore without ads ruining it. Ive tried some sort of google chrome pop up blocker but it doesnt work. Is it a virus? HELP!

Sounds like malware
Usually on youtube you will have an ad playing before the video starts, which can be blocked using adblock plus

I suggest you do a malware scan with malwarebytes

- get the free program from http://www.malwarebytes.org/
- once downloaded install it
- once installed run it, it may ask for an update. Click yes
- you will have 3 options Preform Quick scan, Perform Full scan and Perform Flash scan
-->Pick Perform Full scan and click Scan
---->This will take a while, depending on the computer specs and how infected the system is.
-When the scan finished it may find infected objects. Click Next if it does and click on Remove selected on the next screen
-Restart the computer and hopefully the popups should be gone

Hope that helps a bit!

The ads are probably being inserted by an adware / malware program. To get rid of it, first uninstall any browser extensions or other software that you have installed recently, and are not sure about, as its quite likely one of those is inserting the ads.

If that doesnt work, the next step is to do an antimalware scan. I recommend "MalwareBytes Anti Malware" and also "Super Anti Spyware". Sometimes its worth scanning with both, as sometimes one program will catch something and the other wont.

Once you have cleaned out the malware. A good solution for hiding the "normal" facebook ads that Facebook displays itself, is to install the FB Purity browser extension, which hides all Facebook's own ads. It also has lots of other options for cleaning up other types of facebook junk. Its been reviewed and highly rated in the Washington Post, CNET, Lifehacker and PCWorld.
