a while ago, a friend of mine passed away, but I'm wondering if there's anyway to notify facebook to get the profile deleted?

I'm sure you can. But you'd have to prove it somehow

You could contact them at: http://www.info@facebook.com. to let them know about the deceased. And they would have it memorialized or a remembrance thing. It won't appear in any searches. So it's like the account is still on the website but then it's not. But if you want it deleted, they probably could tell you how to do that also.
