People from school, people you've met, hung out with, family and half of them are strangers that you think are "hot".

They do not know all of them, some people add people they know from their schools and they've never spoken to them in their life, some people add anyone who looks their age, some people literally go through their friend's friends and add those

They friend request anyone they have ever met and those people's friends and so on.

They just add people they dont know, or see around. Sometimes it's friends of friends. 54 isnt bad, i just have close friends and family on mine too. I have 184 though, i've got a huge family and lots of friends.

Because people try to add as many people as they "know" cause its "cool"

I have a little over 800, but that's because I've moved to different placed a lot and I meet so many people at school, clubs, etc. And there's other people who'll just add anybody to make them look 'popular' even if they don't know them. Also others add people from games them play (such as Mafia Wars) since the more friends you have that play it you get more stuff in the game or something like that.

I doubt your friends know all 700 of them. They're probably adding their friends' friends, their friends' siblings, the friends' family, etc..
I only have 140 something. I know someone who has 2,000 friends. The average amount of friends for my school is about 300.

I have that many because i accept everyone who requests me. I don't know half of the people on my facebook.
