Some of my friends have sooo many instagram followers but that's because they have a ton of followers from twitter who follow them. (I don't like using twitter or understand it really...)

first make sure you are taking good pictures that people want to see. not just self portraits and a picture of a bag of chips or arizona ice tea, no one cares about that stuff.
get yourself a statigram account and learn to use HASHTAGS!

Oh and don't just try to get followers for the sake of getting followers, you want to find people who appreciate your pictures and will actively participate and comment with you. thats the fun of instagram! getting a ton of followers seems like a contest to some people but I have seen so many people with crap pictures and a ton of ghost followers just so they can show off how many they have! its silly really and I only want people to follow me who really enjoy my photos
