no, everyone can join, but you have control over how much content is shown

You can make a group, set it to private or secret.
Private allows you to send only invites, but its publicly displayed on the pages. But doesnt allow EVERYONE to join.
Secret is..its hidden from the public eye, so only people specifically looking for it can join.
