Questions about Facebook privacy? - Max - 11-09-2012 10:59 AM

I am not going into college anytime soon, BUT, I have heard horror stories about Facebook related problems. I have no embarrassing or incriminating photos, or bad posts or anything like that. However I was wondering if colleges could actually get on your account, and then see sent private messages.

The college people can see everything you post, even if you deleted them. However, they can't see your inbox, cause that'd be plain ruuude Tongue

They can't, unless they know your email address and password.

Here are some tips on making sure your Facebook profile's privacy settings are set properly:

Go to your Facebook privacy settings (upper right corner of the Facebook page->Account->Privacy Settings) and set all stuff you don't want everyone to see to only your 'Friends' or 'Customize - Only Me' (better). For privacy purposes, avoid setting fields to 'Everyone' or 'Friends of friends'. This includes each of your photo albums.

In Privacy Settings->Basic Directory Information->see if there's any thing here that you'd rather set to 'Friends' or 'Customize - Only Me'.

In Privacy Settings->Customize Settings->Things others share->Can see Wall posts by friends->set this to 'Customize - Only Me', to prevent friends from seeing everything you do in Facebook.
Note: If you also set 'Can comment on posts' to 'Friends' then all your friends can still see your wall status updates, friends' posts in your wall, and photo updates.

Check all of Privacy Settings->Customize Settings to see if there's any thing here that you'd rather set to 'Friends' or 'Customize - Only Me'.

In Privacy Settings->Applications, Games and Websites->Game and application activity->set this to 'Customize - Only Me'

In Privacy Settings->Applications, Games and Websites->Info accessible through your friends->Uncheck everything here

In Privacy Settings->Applications and Websites->Public search->Read the description, see your search profile preview and decide if you want it enabled or not.

There's an option in Facebook to stop most people from seeing you when searching Facebook. Privacy Settings->Basic Directory Information->Search for me in Facebook->Set this to 'Friends' only, if you like

In Privacy Settings->Applications and Websites->Instant Personalization->Uncheck this

In Account->Application Settings->remove all Applications that you don't use. Edit the settings of the applications that you do use and specify the people who you want to see it (either 'Friends' or 'Customize - Only Me').

Just block/reject invitations from the people you don't want to have access to your profile. They won't get an alert that you blocked them anyway.
