what happens when u make status update and choose the option "close friends" next to the post button? does it ONLY show it to close friends? or do all facebook friends see it but close friends have top priority? as in, its of higher priority in their news feed and a lower priority in everyone elses feed?

It will only show it to your close friends if you click that button.

Only the friends you have placed in the 'Close Friends' category will see that post.
Furthermore they will see the NAMES of other 'Close Friends' that are able to see the post.

The core idea behind Facebook’s enhanced lists is that you can share a status update with only a list of friends, rather than with all of your Facebook friends. Avoiding status updates that you don't care about.
The posts will not be visible to other friends than your close friends if you select that option.
