If you don't want people knowing you're online, then they're obviously not really your friends. Delete them.

There should be a little grey lock at the bottom of your status, click that and see what happens, I've never tried to hide my status before so I do not have any experience on how to do it, and if you just want to hide it from some people, remove them as friends. Or if the status is about the people then just don't write that status, it could get nasty.
