If I just log on really fast to check if any new updates have happened will it instantly show up on my friends list that I am online? How long does it take?

it is simple as soon as you get on you are shown as online unless you don't want anyone to see that you online it doesn't take much time at all

As soon as you get on it will show you as online, but you can click the little wheel thing in the top right of the menu and click "Turn off Chat"
