I have not written on Facebook what my contact information is, but I got a new HTC phone and synced it with my Facebook account so that I get updates from my phone. Can my FB friends see my cell phone number?

no, people will can't view this just there will be notification with that status like "updated/posted from HTC mobile" etc. And also if you've filled the information in contact/mobile number there also people couldn't view your number if you change you setting , "who can view you mobile number/contact details to only me". Facebook has all security options to protect it's user personal datas, but need to know the right setting functions.
