BC and AD are NOT insulting!? - Waxy - 11-09-2012 11:28 AM

I'm am atheist and IT DOES NOT OFFEND ME!

Even atheists and scientists agree that there really was a guy named Christ, regardless of whether or not he had a supernatural existence.

SO STOP CONFUSING US OLD PEOPLE WITH THIS NEW FANGLED CE AND BCE CRAP!!!!

The next thing you know, you wont be able to say "Before Computers" because it may offend the Amish! (Really, they don't mind. You can verify that on their Facebook.)

It still records the passage of time in relation to the birth of Christ. It's just another step in political correctness. Get used to it there is more to come.

It isn't so much an offensive term as an imprecise term. Even if one accepts the existence of a real christ, his precise period of existence is not well-defined. BCE is simply a way of saying ""I am using the internationally recognized date for the transition from one period to another" and not in a generic sense. The date of birth of Jesus is not known, and what is known appears to not coincide with the accepted date of transition from BC to AD - the famous census at the time of birth can be established from documentation, and it is 3 years (or something) earlier than the date used to end BC and start AD.

You see the same sort of thing with regard to sea level. people refer to mean sea level (MSL) rather than sea level (ASL above sea level) when discussing topography. Sea level is variable and location specific; mean sea level is a universally accepted datum (zero point). BCE is a universally accepted zero point.

"Even atheists and scientists agree that there really was a guy named Christ"

Actually this is still a matter of contention.
