Similar to this site... Follow what topics are trending and try and tweet out a relevant response using that hash tag. If you're response and content is good you'll start to the followers filter in.

Whats the point of having 14981481414901 followers if you only know 10 of them?
Having followers doesnt make you as cool as you might think it will, it just means a lot of people know you. But to gain followers all you have to do is tweet things people want to hear, and when you get retweeted, all of someone ELSES followers see it, and when you get retweeted people MIGHT want to follow you. *Shrugs*
