Only people you add as friends and people in your network can view your profile (like coworkers or people at your school).

You can set your privacy levels if you go to edit my profile. Nevertheless, only people who are your friends can see your whole profile. People who aren't friends with you can see your name, picture, and school or workplace. If someone requests your friendship you can make it so they only see your limited profile which is your name, picture, and school. So far, I have found facebook very safe, more so than myspace.

Facebook has a number of privacy settings accessible in the upper right corner of your profile. "privacy" is the link. you can make yourself visible to the web, to only people in certain networks, to only people on facebook, or practically no one (except those that are already friends)
