Can someone help with facebook privacy settings? - Robert - 11-09-2012 11:59 AM

I just started college a month ago and made a new facebook profile. I really don't want anyone from my high school to even know the profile exists except one or two good friends. How can I let them view my profile and be friends them without anyone else being able to see that by looking at their profile?
Wait, so people wouldn't be able to find my profile even if I posted on my friend's wall or something?

The only way you can "hide" from people from high school is to change your Search Visibility Privacy Settings. Basically, this will only allow certain Networks to search for you and see you on friends' friend lists. To hide from your high school people, you need to join your College Network. After that, here's what you do:

1) Go to Search Privacy Settings: http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php#/privacy/?view=search
2) In the drop-down menu box next to "Search Visibility," choose Customize.
3) In the pop-up, look towards the bottom of it where it says Networks. In that drop-down menu, choose "Some of my Networks."
4) Put a CHECK in the box next to your College Network. Also in the pop-up, make sure you UNCHECK "Everyone on Facebook." Hit the blue "Okay" button to close the pop-up.
5) Click the blue Save Changes button at the bottom of the page.

This will allow only College people to know you have a Facebook -- they'll be able to search for you and see you on friends' friend lists. However, everyone NOT in your College Network *won't* be able to search/see you/add you. So you'd have to add any high school people (or others who aren't in your College Network) in order to be friends.

So basically, in order to hide from high school people, you join a different Network and let those people see you. As far as I know, there's no way to block a certain Network -- you just need to join a different one instead. Also, you don't necessarily have to join your College Network, it could be a city/regional Network. Just keep in mind that whatever Network you join is where people will be able to find you.
