Probably posting this question was a good start?
On twitter, every Friday there is the "Trending Topic" - "Follow Friday". Just make a twitter or ten on any given Friday that contains the words "Follow Friday" in that order and you'll probably get a few followers from the kind of people who just search the trending topics.
Just tweet: "I love Follow Friday! Please follow me?" on Friday

When I started using it just a month or two ago, I had 5000 followers that I got from clicking everyones follow link, which takes forever doing it this way. Tweet Adder does all the following for you. I now have 15000 followers following me.
