how come when i try asking a direct question, when i check in the drop down box there is no names i can select from in there..... how do i send a direct message
does someone have to be a follower of you to read your updates

u have to be following the person and the person has to be following you 2 so u can do that

Log into Twitter via the Twitter homepage.

Browse to the Twitter direct messages inbox, or click the "Direct Messages" link in the right sidebar.

Compose your private message. Verify the message is correct, because you can't change it once you send it. Click "update" to send the direct message.

I think you need to follow a person to send a direct message, or they be following you.
And yes, someone needs to follow you in order to read your updates.
