I know 2 years ago it was 5,000. But I just saw someone who had 5,003 friends.

there isnt any limit now after they recently updated it

no limit, but be aware to add only friends u know otherwise you will be considered a spam

I dont think there is a limit to how many friends you can have, I do know there is a limit on how many friends you can request in a day though. I have seen some people with over 10,000 friends, most of these people with that many friends are attention seekers and people who want to have the most "friends", even when these "friends" are complete strangers..
