Hey, im just wondering how so many people get 1000s of followers?

Do something stupid/silly/crazy every day (a la Jackass) and brag about it on Facebook or Myspace or whatever. Pretty soon people interested in wasting time will follow you.

Check out http://www.thetraffickey.com/twitter - they have a really great guide there on using twitter effectively. It has a step by step on gaining followers.

sometimes, when you follow people, they follow you back.
or people just randomly find you.
advertise your twitter on your myspace/facebook, etc.
and you can also respond to people's tweets on the "trending topics" thing. maybe they'll follow you.
