Depending on your settings is whether or not people can see your friends. If someone has a friend in common with you, they have a mutual friend. So, yes they can but only if they have a friend in common. Mainly it all depends on your settings.

yes, if they have friends in common with you, they can see them, even if you have your friends list hidden

It depends on how the person they're trying to find has their account setup. I have mine setup that only friends of friends can find me. Random people cannot see me on FB.
